'Who by Fire' Dinner/Salad Plate

These dinner/salad plates were made as a contribution to Ray Barrett’s ‘Who by Fire’ - a show focused on creation and connectivity through fire. This dinner set was included in the show as wares for a collection of meals and gatherings that focused on resourcefulness and locality. The focus for this show was creating items that were resourcefully made and utilized materials that are readily available to us without industrial intervention or aid. In tandem with the concept, I chose to make pieces sourced from recycled materials. The clay is sourced from landfills - commercial clay thrown away by universities and clay suppliers. The glaze is made from charcoal ash sourced from my charcoal grill. I find great pleasure in being able to utilize materials that are readily available and would otherwise be seen as waste. These plates are fired to Cone 10 in my gas reduction kiln.
